What is a Walking Session in Therapy?
Updated: Sep 25
Moving forward, side-by-side
Traditional therapy often happens sitting across from one another in a quiet room, and now is often virtually over a video call. While this works well for many, we also offer walking sessions at Mindful Rehab as a dynamic alternative.
Also known as walk-and-talk therapy, or physically active talk therapy, a walking session simply brings the therapeutic process into the real world. We typically walk in a calm, outdoor environment while we talk. This approach leverages the science of movement and being in nature to help regulate your nervous system and process information as we work together on your concerns.
Connect before we correct
One of our core philosophies is "connect before we correct." When you are stressed or stuck, your brain's instinctual networks take over - we call this the Default Mode. Sitting still in an office can sometimes reinforce that, and you may find progress isn't being made.
By walking as we talk things through, we are practicing bilateral stimulation. The rhythmic movement of walking naturally helps the brain process information and settles the nervous system. The open environment reduces pressure, making it easier to share and explore complex situations with openness and flexibility. This connect-first approach allows us restore a healthy, regulated mind-body state, from which we can make better decisions, set clear intentions, and get the most out of new strategies.
A mindful approach to resilience and rehab
Walking sessions also provide a perfect environment to be fully present. Mindfulness doesn't just mean meditation; it means fully participating in the moment with an openness to experience. Sensory rich outdoor spaces provide ample opportunity to practice and develop your ability to be in the Deliberate Mode - where we stay observant, focused, and effective to our intentions. Every time you redirect your attention away from unhelpful, spiraling thoughts and back to the present, you are completing a mental repetition that builds resilience.

Whether you are preparing to stay resilient through for challenges, or recovering from psychological injury, walking sessions are a great option to enable your success. The act of walking is inherently forward-moving, which mirrors the deliberate effort required to maintain and improve your functional capacity.
At Mindful Rehab®, we strive to help you be at your best for your important pursuits, responsibilities, and relationships. Walking sessions are a great way to move forwards in your mental and functional health.
