From Default to Deliberate: How does a Mental Health Occupational Therapist help?
Research demonstrates that at least 50% of Canadians face a mental health disruption in their lifespan. As stress mounts and resilience erodes, daily life becomes interfered with, our capacity to handle difficulty can be overwhelmed. Left unaddressed, your health, work, relationships, and daily responsibilities can be profoundly impacted.
Mental Health Occupational Therapists (MH-OT) address the compounding interaction between mental health concerns and functional difficulties. At Mindful Rehab™, we work to prevent, reverse, and protect from the vicious cycle that drags people down. We work with you as a whole person to restore resilience and functional abilities while reducing the internal challenges that disrupt your daily life. We help with concerns related to emotions, cognition, pain, activity, and relationships - including trauma, neurodiversity, and work issues.
Whether you are facing a temporary state of psychological distress or navigating a chronic psychological injury, a MH-OT partners with you to safely restore your wellness.
Moving from Default to Deliberate
When a major life impact occurs and interferes with healthy function, the stress causes people to naturally shift into a Default Mode. The brain's survival networks take over in a biological reaction, sometimes called "flipping the lid," that cause states of disconnection, dysregulation, and dysfunction. In these states, people tend to reactively avoid or push through demands until they crash, creating an exhausting boom & bust cycle. When unhealthy default mode patterns are overwhelming, we refer to them as Distress Cycles.
A MH-OT helps to resolve the unhealthy patterns and stabilize the survival network, bringing you out out of this involuntary autopilot state. Through brain-based strategies made practical, we can shift into the Deliberate Mode and get things back on track. The Deliberate Mode enables states of healthy regulation, connection, and function. Instead of being stuck and exhausted, we help you slow down, restore your resilience, and move forward with a sustainable balance.
Balancing Resilience and Rehabilitation
Lasting wellness relies on a dual approach. Resilience requires being proactive to identify and respond effectively to early signs of strain, addressing issues before the Default Mode takes control. When wellness is significantly disrupted and function is impacted, we rely on Rehabilitation to navigate your recovery and rebuild your capacity.
In order to maintain resilience and optimize rehabilitation, we encourage a balance of productive efforts with restorative practices. Mindfulness enables a far more effective, active recharge compared to being on autopilot with passive rest or distractions.
Moving Forward Mindfully
Mindfulness is a core foundation of mental and functional health practice, established in cultural practices around the world and validated over the last 30 years of research. Mindfulness is the practice of fully participating in the moment with an openness to experience, curiosity, and non-judgment. As a skill, mindfulness enables the shift into the Deliberate Mode.
The practice of mindfulness is similar to exercise. Think of your brain like a muscle: every time your mind wanders and you deliberately return your focus to what's at hand, you are completing a repetition that structurally builds healthy pathways in the brain. We validate every bit of effort, because every small act counts as one more repetition.
Every practice, both for productive tasks and restorative activity, reinforces new neuroplastic pathways in the brain. As presence and awareness develops, it becomes easier to handle difficult thoughts and feelings, and in turn to navigate challenging situations effectively. MH-OTs at Mindful Rehab support this as a foundational strategy to move through and overcome adversity, enhance mental health, and improve functional abilities.
