If you find yourself living in an unhealthy default mode - reactive or passive, stuck on autopilot - the Mindful Rehab team helps with specialized training, intensive experience, and compassionate care. We strive to help you be at your best and thrive with lasting wellness.
At Mindful Rehab, Mental Health Occupational Therapy (MHOT) is a function-focused health practice designed to bridge the gap between your internal mental health and your external daily life. MHOT specializes to address the psychological, emotional, and cognitive issues related to injury, illness, pain, trauma, and more.
When mental health is compromised, whether an acute instance or chronic episodes, unhelpful, interfering, and disruptive patterns can develop. Symptoms and dysfunction can result in a negative feedback loop that may spiral out of control – such as anxiety and procrastination, or burnout and inactivity. MHOT analyzes the connection between you, your internal states (mind and body), and your external situations (your environments, responsibilities, and relationships).
Mental Health Occupational Therapy (MHOT) helps you:
• Move from Default to Deliberate: Shift automatic reactions to intentional responses with practical strategies and self-regulation skills.
• Restore Healthy Function: Rebuild daily routines, organize plans, and optimize spaces to be set up for success.
• Navigate Challenges: Collaborate to approach difficulty, tolerate interference, and handle the unexpected with concrete plans.
• Build Resilience: Develop sustainable habits for sleep, self-care, and productivity that support personal growth and lasting wellness.
The MHOT goal is to move beyond talk processing and provide you with real-world skills to help you function comfortably, independently, and successfully.
Both psychologists and occupational therapists are highly trained professionals who provide essential, often complementary, assessment and treatment for mental health. Psychological approaches are an integral part of Mental Health Occupational Therapy (MHOT) as a discipline of rehabilitation science. Where traditional counselling therapy primarily focuses on talk processing, MHOT complements this with practical strategies informed by mind-body principles. Through personalized care, MHOT helps individuals navigate challenges, build resilience, regain confidence, and achieve real-world progress.
While there is a great overlap in treatment approaches, the main difference lies in specific areas of expertise.
Psychologists are experts in diagnosis, psychological testing, and psychotherapy. Their work focuses on processing experiences, understanding the "why" behind your thoughts and behaviors, and treating specific mental health conditions. There are specific assessment tools that only Psychologists are permitted to administer and interpret.
Mental Health Occupational Therapists are experts in systems of connection - internally within oneself and externally with the world. This includes your mind, brain, and body, as well as your activities, environments, and other people. We understand that your internal state directly impacts what you do, and conversely, what you do impacts how you feel. We also appreciate that these systems do not present or interact the same for every individual.
By focusing on these internal and external interactions, MHOT helps you address both your health symptoms and dysfunction concerns in tandem. MHOT serves to develop deliberate effectiveness to navigate challenges, build resilience, regain confidence, and achieve real-world progress.
Which do I need? The most important factor for your progress is a strong therapeutic alliance, or that you are confident to be working with the right person. Our team of dedicated Mental Health Occupational Therapists are happy to be of help.
MHOT is a great fit if you're looking to:
• Find a good fit for a personalized, tailored experience
• Lean into your strengths with a practical starting point
• Develop new strategies to address weak points and challenges

Mental Health Occupational Therapy (MHOT) is likely the right fit if you feel like your mental health is acting as a barrier to living the life you want. If you often find yourself stuck uncertain of where to start, or thinking, "I just can't seem to do it," MHOT can help bridge that gap.
You are likely a good candidate for OT if you find experiencing a Distress Cycle or having difficulty in any of it's component factors:
• Disconnection: Being distracted, preoccupied, or shut down; lacking presence and awareness
• Dysregulation: Feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or shut down
• Dysfunction: Acting impulsive and reactive, procrastinating, avoiding others, or lapsing in self care
You may benefit from our approach if want:
• to move from Default to Deliberate: You are tired of reacting to stress and want to establish proactive strategies.
• to navigate a Major Life Event or Transition: You are dealing with major changes, expected or unexpected, or are trying to return to work or school after a leave of absence.
• to develop Practical Skills and Tools: You are looking for skills and strategies to better manage energy, emotions, and thoughts both in real-time and in routine.
• to try a Rehabilitation-Dedicated Therapeutic Approach: You have worked with someone else, maybe for years, it's time to push growth forward with a new, complementary approach.
If you are unsure, an initial assessment is the best first step. One of our expert therapists can assess your mental health and functional needs to determine if our approach - or a multidisciplinary one - is the best path of growth for you.
Occupational Therapy is a regulated health profession requiring rigorous clinical training. At minimum, all our therapists hold a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MScOT) and are licensed by the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
Beyond this foundational degree, Mental Health Occupational Therapists (MHOTs) pursue advanced, post-graduate training in evidence-based psychotherapies. This allows us to address the internal aspects of your health with the same rigour as the functional aspects.
Common advanced training and certifications include:
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
• Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy for PTSD
• Somatic and Sensory Based Approaches
• Attachment Informed Practices
• Trauma Informed Practices
This combination of rehabilitation science background with specialized mental health and psychological training ensures that your care is safe, effective, and capable.
