Mental Health Occupational TherapyWorkplace Stress & Psychological InjuryOur Unique ApproachesThe Client Experience & What to ExpectLogistics: Insurance - Cost - Resources
Yes, Occupational Therapy (OT) is a recognized health profession in Alberta, and services are frequently covered through various insurance and funding pathways. Because coverage varies significantly between individual plans and employers, we recommend you play it safe: check with your insurer to verify benefits coverage before starting treatment.
Common Coverage Options in Alberta
At Mindful Rehab, we work with several funding streams to ensure you can access the mental health support you need:
Health Insurance: Most major private insurers in Alberta—including Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, and GreenShield—offer coverage for Occupational Therapy under Extended Health Care or Paramedical Services categories. Some plans may require a physician’s referral to process claims.
Health Spending Accounts (HSA): If your plan includes an HSA or Personal Spending Account (PSA), OT services are almost always an eligible expense.
Workers' Compensation (WCB): If you are recovering from a work-related psychological injury, your treatment may be fully funded through a WCB Alberta claim.
Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Claims: If your mental health challenges are a result of a vehicle accident, OT is typically covered under your auto insurance "Section B" benefits.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC): We provide specialized support for veterans whose services are funded through federal programs.
Licensed Counselling Therapy
Some Mental Health Occupational Therapists with Mindful Rehab hold additional licensing with the Association of Counselling Therapists of Alberta (ACTA). This allows them to bill as a counselling therapist/clinical counsellor/psychotherapist to major insurance groups:
Canada Life
Sunlife
Manulife
Medavie
Johnston Group
Chambers
Equitable Life Canada
Telus Health
How Mindful Rehab Supports Your Claim
Navigating insurance can be the "administrative fog" we mention in our recovery process. We help clear that fog by:
Verifying Coverage: Our team can help you confirm your coverage per session, yearly maximums, and whether a doctor's referral is required.
Direct Billing: We offer direct billing where possible, to reduce your out-of-pocket costs at the time of your appointment. Please note that direct billing options are limited.
Invoice Documents: We provide detailed receipts to support your reimbursement, or clinical reports to assist your case manager and claim owner.
Mindful Rehab Tip: If your current employer-sponsored plan does not list "Occupational Therapy" as a benefit, you can often request its addition. OT is a high-value, cost-effective service that focuses on functional recovery and wellness.
In Alberta, direct billing for Occupational Therapy is widely available through several major networks and specialized programs. Because the "direct billing" eligibility can change based on your specific workplace policy, we always recommend providing your benefits card to our team for a real-time coverage check.
The following insurers and programs typically allow direct billing for Occupational Therapy services at Mindful Rehab™:
Alberta Blue Cross: One of the most common providers in the province. We can typically bill them directly through their Providernet portal.
Sun Life: As of February 2026, Sun Life expanded its eClaims service to fully include Occupational Therapists, making direct billing seamless for most members.
Manulife & Canada Life: Both insurers allow direct billing for OT services through the TELUS Health eClaims network.
TELUS Health eClaims Network:
Many other extended health providers use the TELUS Health platform, which explicitly supports Occupational Therapy claims. These include:
Beneva & Desjardins Insurance
Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance
Industrial Alliance (iA Financial Group)
Equitable Life of Canada
Green Shield Canada
ClaimSecure, GroupSource, and Simply Benefits
Johnson Inc. & Johnston Group
Specialized & Provincial Funding
WCB Alberta: If you have an open claim for a workplace psychological injury, we bill WCB directly for authorized sessions.
Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA): Under Alberta's "Section B" protocols, we can often bill your auto insurer directly for treatments related to an accident.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC): We are registered providers for VAC and can direct bill for veterans with approved coverage.
Mindful Rehab™ Note: Even if your specific plan does not allow for direct billing (meaning you pay upfront and get reimbursed), Occupational Therapy is almost always an eligible expense under your Health Spending Account (HSA).
Yes, many of our Mental Health Occupational Therapists and Counselling Therapists offer a sliding-scale fee option. We believe that financial stress should not be the barrier that prevents you from getting help for your mental health.
We reserve a limited number of Sliding Scale spots specifically for:
Students.
Clients without insurance coverage.
Individuals facing temporary financial hardship (e.g., job loss).
How to access it: Please do not hesitate to ask. When you book your free 15-minute consultation, simply mention that you are interested in our sliding scale options. We will have a frank, confidential discussion about what is manageable for you.
Note: If our sliding scale spots are currently full, we will direct you to other low-cost community resources so you aren't left without support.
Yes. You do not need a doctor's referral to see a Mental Health Occupational Therapist or Counselling Therapist in Alberta. You can book an appointment directly with us at any time.
While we do not require one, your insurance plan may require a doctor's referral for reimbursement.
Modern Plans: Most newer plans allow for "Direct Access" without a doctor's note.
Older Plans: Some traditional benefit packages still require a "Physician's Written Order" before they will pay you back.
Play It Safe: We recommend contacting your insurer to verify your coverage details. This acts as a safety net to avoid unexpected financial stress.
We have designed our booking process to be as low-stress as possible.

If your current health insurance plan doesn't cover Occupational Therapy (OT), don't assume the door is closed. Insurers and employers often have discretion to approve exceptions, especially if they understand the Return on Investment (ROI).
Advocating effectively means shifting the conversation from "I need therapy" to "I need support to maintain my ability to work at my best".
How to make your case:
1. Speak the "Employer's Language": When speaking to HR or your manager, focus on function.
Instead of: "I am stressed out and need support."
Try: "I am seeking Occupational Therapy to build a proactive plan for preventing burnout and managing my workload. This will help me sustain my productivity and performance".
2. Request a Support Letter: We can provide a formal support letter explaining that OT is goes beyond just counselling; it is a tailored, proactive rehabilitation intervention designed to restore and improve your functional capacity.
3. Ask for One-Time Exception: An "ex-gratia" payment is an industry term for a "one-time exception." Employers can authorize this outside of the standard benefits package if they believe it will prevent a more expensive claim later.
The Bottom Line: You don't have to fight this battle alone. If you are hitting a wall, let us know - we can help equip you with the documentation you need to advocate for your health.
Detox (Withdrawal Management) services in Alberta are publicly funded and available through Alberta Health Services (AHS). Accessing them depends on your urgency and your location.
1. Immediate Medical Danger (Call 911) If you or someone else is experiencing seizures, loss of consciousness, or severe withdrawal symptoms, call 911 immediately. Detox from certain substances (especially alcohol and benzodiazepines) can be life-threatening without medical supervision.
2. Finding a Bed (The "Access" Lines)To get admitted to a detox centre, you generally need to call the intake line for your specific zone. They will assess your medical safety and tell you which facilities have open beds.

Health Link: Call 811 (24/7) to speak with a nurse who can assess if you need medical detox (hospital-based) or social detox (community-based).
Key Difference: Medical vs. Social Detox

Social Detox: For clients who are medically stable but need a safe, substance-free environment to withdraw.
